Orange Film News – Reviewing The Oscar Nominees For 2010 – 23/10/2010
Friday, May 14th, 2010This is the first year since 1943 that the Best Picture category has had ten nominations, and in spite of a very respectable list of nominees, there’s some disappointment. The category was expanded to allow for some variety and it’s gratifying to see Up and District 9 make the list, giving cheer to animation and sci-fi fans.
Nevertheless, with two of the year’s best films A Prophet and The White Ribbon relegated to the ghetto of the Foreign Language category, it’s evident that it’s going to be some time before Academy voters change their ways. Nominees also include critical favourites Precious, A Serious Man and An Education which are all represented in the acting categories â check out the Orange website for film reviews for these.
Awkwardly however, it’s widely recognised that for all but two of the Best Picture nominations the game is over already. The real contenders for the award are Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Leading with nine nominations each, they’re up against each other not only for the big wins like Best Picture and Director, but also in technical categories like sound editing and sound mixing. However, whilst The Hurt Locker has been clearing up the critical awards, stereoscopic box-office behemoths are a great favourite with the Academy and so Avatar stands a strong chance of winning.
There is also still a minor chance that the Bigelow/Cameron dichotomy face off could split voters, leading dark horse Inglourious Basterds to win big. Quentin Tarantino, who has never felt much love from the academy, has been unsuccessful at the Oscars since his Pulp Fiction screenplay. The controversial film stands it’s best chance of winning with favourite Nazi Christopher Waltz in the supporting actor category.
Waltz, who won at the Baftas, is in a strong group of peers though. You can judge yourself by checking out these film trailers with Stanley Tucci’s unsettlingly creepy performance in The Lovely Bones; a South African Matt Damon in Invictus; and the distinguished Christopher Plummer as Tolstoy in The Last Station.
