Rock of Love: a Brandi C. Flavor

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Devotees of the VH1 reality television competition series Rock of Love will remember contestant Brandi C., who was part of the A-Team (a.k.a. the Varsity Squad) clique of girls on the show, that also included fellow contestants Heather, Lacey, Tawny, and Kristia. The series followed the efforts of numerous women as they tried to win the affections, attention and ultimately capture the heart of Poison band member Bret Micheals. In an interview, however, Brandi C. has explained that she was actually considering joining a different reality series instead of Rock of Love. The other show that had caught her eye was Flavor of Love, which features rapper and Public Enemy member Flavor Flav.

Brandi C. stated that she thought that people were having fun on Flavor of Love, and that she loved the concept of the show. However, she further clarified to VH1 that the reason she didn’t sign up for it was because she didn’t feel any attraction at all to the starring rap artist. She said that she didn’t feel like pretending to be in love with him, and that she also believed she would be ripped apart by the other competing females. When she joined Rock of Love instead, she gamely participated and battled for the heart of Bret Michaels, until her eventual elimination from the show.

When asked about her elimination, she said that she felt shocked about it happening, and was sad at having to leave Bret. She was likewise saddened over having to leave her friends in the so-called A-Team, though she continues to keep in touch with them. The rock star’s main reason was that he felt his relationship with Brandi C. at the time would be purely sexual, and needed a stronger foundation than that. She likewise felt that she represented his past life of loose fun, and that he wanted to find something more stable.

Rock of Love: Heather “appalled” at Editing of Final Episode

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

The season finale of the VH1 reality television series Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, titled “The Rose and the Thorn,” saw contestants Heather Chadwell and Jessica “Jes” Rickleff in the final showdown for the affection of the titular rock star. A musician and longtime member of the band Poison, Bret Michaels eventually chose Jes over Heather, while the latter stormed out in a fit over her defeat. However, Heather has stated that she was appalled over the presentation and editing of the last episode, which seemed specifically designed to show that she was a bad choice for Michaels who did not deserve him at all.

According to the footage shown on the episode, Chadwell’s behavior ranged from dancing with other women, to paying little heed to the potential insulin shock that Bret might have suffered from, and her apparent final answer to the question that she wouldn’t mind sharing him in a possible ménage a trois. On her MySpace page, she angrily protested and aired her own personal version of what happened, titled “The Truth about the Final Episode.” The former stripper claimed that she had shed a lot of tears over her portrayal in the series, especially during the finale, where she said it was heartbreaking to be depicted as seemingly so insensitive.

She also furnished several more details, such as during their date in Cabo, where she says she got him a glass of water after he stated that he wasn’t feeling well. Chadwell likewise claims that it was actually Michaels who wanted to keep riding, in order to keep getting more different camera angles and shots for the show. She claims that at that point, she was already full of sand, and would have enjoyed simply relaxing on the beach instead of continuing to ride around. She also says that she made him breakfast in bed, bought him roses and balloons on his birthday, and that during the final episode she did not want to share him at all either.

Kiwi Craze Floods Cable And Satellite Tv

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Billing themselves as “Formerly New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo,” Flight of the Conchords is a Kiwi comedy duo that specializes is in witticisms to the tune of an acoustic guitar. The widely popular television show can now be viewed on HBO via cable or satellite TV after having first been turned into a BBC radio series due to a number of acclaimed live performances.

Staring Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, also known as Rhymenocerous Hiphopopotamus, respectively, the fictional series focuses on the duo as they try (rather unsuccessfully) to form an American fan base in New York City. Each episode features a number of ridiculous and hilarious song sequences that can be a real concert experience with a high definition set up.

The regular cast also features fellow comedians Rhys Darby as the New Zealand cultural attaché/band manager Murray, Arj Barker as their friend and personal adviser Dave, Kristen Schaal as crazed (and potentially only) fan Mel, David Costabile as Mel’s either oblivious or tolerant husband Doug, and Eugene Mirman as their landlord Eugene. With such a winning ensemble, the laughs are virtually nonstop.

The television series premiered in 2007 and to the dismay of many only lived for two seasons. Due to the show’s persistent popularity, HBO continues to air re-runs of Flight of the Conchords and can be viewed through cable and satellite TV.

Despite the unmotivated, unsuccessful characters they play in the show, Bret and Jermain have a number of feats under their belts that lead up to their television debut. They won the title of Best Alternative Comedy act at the 2005 US Comedy Arts Festival and Best Newcomer at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and were nominated for a Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2003.

In 2004, the BBC radio series under the same name began airing, resulting in a Sony Radio Academy Award for comedy. Much like the television series, the show focused on the dynamic duo trying to acquire a fan base but in London instead of New York. It also starred Rhys Darby as their manager along with narrator Rob Brydon and Jimmy Carr as the essential dedicated fan.

In 2007, they were musical guests on both David Letterman’s Late Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. They also performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee and released the album The Distant Future in that same year. In February of 2008, The Distant Future took home the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.

Last year in 2009, Flight of the Conchords went on a national tour selling out at many venues across the country, demonstrating that no actual plotlines are necessary to render its anecdotal humor a success.

If dry humor, a couple of Kiwis and acoustic guitars sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to check out Flight of the Conchords on HBO or keep your eyes open for one of their live shows.
