Lady Gaga, Something About Foreign Policy: Sandra Bullock

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Lady Gaga andSandra Bullock: What do these two attractive female celebrities have in common? They were both featured in the headlines of conservative opinion columns today! Let us investigate why Sandra Bullock and Lady Gaga were in the headlines.

Wait… you didn’t actually this was going to be, like, actually about Lady Gaga or Sandra Bullock, did you? No: It is about David Brooks’ column in the New York Times today, and Bret Stephens’ in the Wall Street Journal. Brooks’ column: “The Sandra Bullock Trade”; Stephens’ Column: “Lady Gaga Versus Mideast Peace.” Two conservative columnists, two references to culturally relevant female celebrities. What is going on? Let’s break it down.

What You Think It Will Be About: Something about neo-Nazi strippers and motorcycles and stuff.

What It’s Actually About:David Brooks’ Times column is about research which weighs personal vs. professional success. It has absolutely nothing to do with Sandra Bullock, except for the fact that Sandra Bullock is professionally successful but has a husband who did a bunch of strippers. Brooks reveals that scientists have shown that rich people can be unhappy if they don’t have a fulfilling personal life. This somehow leads to the conclusion that “governments keep initiating policies they think will produce prosperity, only to get sacked, time and again, from their spiritual blind side.” Government is bad.

Attractive Female Celebrity-related Lede:

Two things happened to Sandra Bullock this month. First, she won an Academy Award for best actress. Then came the news reports claiming that her husband is an adulterous jerk. So the philosophic question of the day is: Would you take that as a deal?

What You Think It Will Be About: Lady Gaga wore a hat to the Tween Appreciation Awards that was made to look like an Israeli/Palestinian peace agreement. The hat got slimed, enraging Palestinians and Israelis alike.

What It Is Actually About:Bret Stephens Wall Street Journal article argues that we should let Israeli continue to expand its settlements in the West Bank because this does not cause nearly as much anti-American sentiment as the fact that American women are sluts. Or, as Islamist writer and apparent 50s pulp-fiction author Sayyid Qutb put it: “the American Temptress”. So, we should either imprison Lady Gaga immediately, or just shut up about the settlements.

Pop quiz-What does more to galvanize radical anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world: (a) Israeli settlements on the West Bank; or (b) a Lady Gaga music video?

Chelmsford V Festival – From ‘pulp’ To Non-’fiction’

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The V Festival in Chelmsford, held in August every year, is fast becoming one of the UK’s premier music festivals. Held in the beautiful surroundings of Hylands Park, the backdrop provides a spectacular setting for a great weekend of musical entertainment.

Since it began in 1996 the event has gone from strength to strength and got bigger and better. Known initially as V96, it was originally the idea of Pulp front man, Jarvis Cocker, who thought it would be a great thing if he could play two different outdoor venues in two days, one in the North of the country and one in the South. This quickly manifested itself and was followed by further proposals including adding more bands to the bill, putting in another stage, and allowing people to camp for the weekend. Hence the V Festival was born.

The first festival took place over the penultimate weekend in August and included artists such as Pulp, Paul Weller, Supergrass, The Charlatans, Gary Numan, The Cardigans, Kula Shaker, and the Lightening Seeds. Deemed a huge success, plans were quickly put in place for the following year.

Since 2003, the event has been known purely as the V Festival. Over the years hundreds of artists have appeared on an ever increasing number of stages and tents. Just a few of these include Lady Gaga, Keane, Amy Winehouse, Girls Aloud, The Stranglers, Sugababes, Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs, & Snow Patrol.

The V Festival in 2009 caused a bit of controversy when due to illness, Oasis pulled out at the last minute. In addition, around 800 injuries, mostly due to falls, were reported, and staff had restrict entry to the performance of Lady Gaga when fans became stuck in a narrow entrance to the Arena stage. Despite this, and the criticism that the festival is over commercialised, it is a highly regarded and seen as one of the more friendly events in the UK calendar.

This year’s event will take place on August 21st & 22nd August, 2010, and was sold out within 90mins of tickets going on sale. Headlining the festival will be Kings of Leon on the Saturday and Kasbian on the Sunday. Others acts confirmed include Florence and the Machine, Paloma Faith, Cheryl Cole, Pet Shop Boys, Mika, Doves, and Calvin Harris.

Whoever is appearing on whatever stage, the V Festival is a great event and one not to be missed.

Lady Gaga explains the idea behind the Telephone Video (HQ)

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Gaga talks about the idea of the ‘Telephone’ video, her work with Beyonce, ‘Pussy Wagon’ & about Quentin Tarantino. THE IDEO IS VEERY GREAT RAP-UP.COM: Dont feel bad if you didnt understand the concept behind Lady Gagas Telephone video. Theres certainly always a hidden message in my music videos, Gaga tells E! News. Im always trying to convolute everyones idea of what a pop music video should be. According to the megastar, the Quentin Tarantino-inspired clip is a commentary on American culture. I wanted to do the same thing [as 'Paparazzi'] with this video. Take a decidedly pop song, which on the surface has a quite shallow meaning, and turn it into something deeper; the idea that America is full of young people that are inundated with information and technology, and turn it into something that was more of a commentary on the kind of country that we are. She also had something to say about her partner in crime Beyoncé, who she shares screen time with for the second time. I was very excited to be working with Beyoncé again. It just sort of works out because we both like women.

Friday, June 25th, 2010

What’s Your Style? Elegant or trendy? Lady Gaga or more Jessica Alba? Or are you more of a person who wears jeans-and-a-sweater in every occasion? No single look is right for everybody in all situations. Even when people have the same profession they may express their unique personality through their style. What feels the best often look the best.  Someone who feels comfortable and confident in what they are wearing create a better impression than someone who is well dressed, but feels uncomfortable.

Classic Style for Women

The classic look never goes out of style. It is timeless beautiful, but simple, cuts in clothing, fine natural fabrics, and leather shoes and handbags. Tradition is important to her. A classic woman may wear a black Armani suit, black turtleneck and a black slack. She may occasionally become frustrated when she can’t find the exact style of a beloved item of clothing, handbag, or shoe that has worn out.  And you frequently keep her fashion accessories and clothing until they are worn, just because much of what she buys does not go out of style. Although she won’t be the flashiest person in a room, she will always look good. Women, who prefer to dress classic, may prefer to keep their hair shoulder long, parted on the side, and the sideswept hair falls on the face in structured or combed curls or pulled back.

She views the past as a more romantic time and can picture herself as the heroine in a historical romance. The Victorian Era appeals to her as part of a romantic past when women always wore long skirts, hats, and gloves. She is likely to be a collector of beautiful objects, perhaps antique hatpins or china with floral motifs. They wear minimal make-up, with maybe a touch of lipstick or mascara. Their clothing is comfortable and cosy. They hair is simply maybe pulled back to a ponytail or loosely laying on their shoulders. She wants comfort and ease.  She probably doesn’t like to iron and prefer a very easy to care for hair style.  She might not like to get dressed up. Her friends think she is wearing the same outfit over and over because she end up  wearing the same few comfortable things or have the same style in different colours that she wears over and over.
