Tina Fey’s 30 Rock has honed and refined it’s excruciating brand of “awkward comedy” during the last three years, and the award-winning show is still going strong.
Shows like Arrested Development and the stand-up of Late Night with Conan O’Brien helped build an audience for awkward humor over the last decade. The shift was a refreshing change from the mundane observations of Jerry Seinfeld and the crude physical comedy of cartoons like Family Guy. Awkward comedy began to flourish when Arrested Development aired on Fox in 2003, paving the way for shows like The Office. But The Office ain’t what it once was, as Michael Scott’s workplace antics have gone from blushably funny to old. So when The Office started to go bad and Arrested Development was cancelled, prospects for awkward comedy looked bleak.
30 Rock is keeping the genre alive. The comics of Saturday Night Live are experienced in self-deprecating humor, and Tina Fey (who plays Liz Lemon) is a pro. As head honcho of the fictional show TGS with Tracy Jordan, she’s never afraid to say exactly what pops into her head: “Hey, nerds! Guess who has two thumbs, speaks limited French, and hasn’t cried once today. This moi!” In moments like that, 30 Rock sets the standard for awkward humor, while also raising the bar for TV comedy.

Rock of Love: a Brandi C. Flavor
Friday, May 14th, 2010Devotees of the VH1 reality television competition series Rock of Love will remember contestant Brandi C., who was part of the A-Team (a.k.a. the Varsity Squad) clique of girls on the show, that also included fellow contestants Heather, Lacey, Tawny, and Kristia. The series followed the efforts of numerous women as they tried to win the affections, attention and ultimately capture the heart of Poison band member Bret Micheals. In an interview, however, Brandi C. has explained that she was actually considering joining a different reality series instead of Rock of Love. The other show that had caught her eye was Flavor of Love, which features rapper and Public Enemy member Flavor Flav.
Brandi C. stated that she thought that people were having fun on Flavor of Love, and that she loved the concept of the show. However, she further clarified to VH1 that the reason she didn’t sign up for it was because she didn’t feel any attraction at all to the starring rap artist. She said that she didn’t feel like pretending to be in love with him, and that she also believed she would be ripped apart by the other competing females. When she joined Rock of Love instead, she gamely participated and battled for the heart of Bret Michaels, until her eventual elimination from the show.
When asked about her elimination, she said that she felt shocked about it happening, and was sad at having to leave Bret. She was likewise saddened over having to leave her friends in the so-called A-Team, though she continues to keep in touch with them. The rock star’s main reason was that he felt his relationship with Brandi C. at the time would be purely sexual, and needed a stronger foundation than that. She likewise felt that she represented his past life of loose fun, and that he wanted to find something more stable.

Rock of Love: Rocking the Ratings
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010The VH1 network’s reality television series Rock of Love with Bret Michaels owes its dominant success to the fans, having become one of the channel’s highest-rating shows. The competitive series stars Poison band member and rock star Bret Michaels, and features a number of women attempting to win his attention and affection through a series of various tasks. It reached the number one spot for all cable shows during a previous Sunday. The show was made by Mark Cronin and Cris Abrego, in the spirit of previous shows such as Flavor of Love. Rock of Love spans across 12 episodes, having begun last July 15 and set to conclude on September 30.
Last September 16, which was also known as “Emmy Sunday,” Rock of Love reached the top and hit the number one ranking for all cable shows, whether standard or pay-per-view, for that day. The episode broadcast was “Meet the Parents,” and it achieved a 2.4 rating for the 18-49 age demographic for a total of roughly 3.5 million viewers. This marks the episode as the most-watched chapter of the series to date. The episode itself revolves around Michaels meeting up with the parents of romantic hopefuls Lacey, Jess, and Heather.
After several incidents of typical tension between the musician and the parents, Michaels singled out Lacey for elimination, which left Heather and Jess in the running for his heart. But on the other hand, it wasn’t just the rock star who dominated the reality shows for that evening, but a familiar old wrestling icon as well. Hogan Knows Best is a reality television series that stars wrestling celebrity Hulk Hogan, and is centered on his family life. Hogan, who is also recognized by the name Terry Bollea, makes an effort to assist with his own offspring’s growing careers. Hogan Knows Best reached a rating of 1.7 for the 18-19 demographics that night.
