Top Movies Of 2009 – No Sports Movies (Part 1)
Sunday, May 2nd, 2010The top movies of 2009 have one thing in common â no sports flicks. No Rudy, no Invictus, no Miracle on Ice to talk about. Nevertheless, 2009 was a great year for Hollywood film buffs. Films like Watchmen, Public Enemies and Inglourious Basterds made sure that the movie going public went home with a smile on its face.
The list starts with Watchmen, the superhero movie that was anything but the typical superhero movie. The hit movie is based on the widely popular graphic novel. Â It centers around two generations of superheroes who over time become obsolete in the view of humanity. The superhero movie is a realistic take on ordinary people trying to become extraordinary and the trial and tribulations that go along with it. The weight of being superhuman drives some of the superheroes, such as “The Comedian” to do unimaginable things such as killing innocent women and children and raping fellow superhero “The Silk Spectre.” In the end, the pressure of representing good and banishing evil drives the superheroes apart and puts all of humanity in harm’s way.
Public Enemies, the action adventure starring Johnny Depp, centers around the life of John Dilinger and his crew of misfits. John Dilinger was the leader of the amazing crime wave that occurred in the 1930s that led to the creation of the FBI, headed by J. Edgar Hoover. The film captures the monster that was Dilinger while also portraying him in a likeable light. While Dilinger was possibly the most dangerous man of the 30s and atop the FBI’s most wanted list, fellow citizens still rooted for him and never had any ill will towards him. This is primarily due to the fact that Dilinger always remained respectful while committing his many criminal acts. It is widely known that he never went into a bank with the intention of killing anyone unless he absolutely had to. He also trained his men to work in a similar manner; however, they did not always listen, like in the case of Baby Face Nelson. Johnny Depp captures the intensity of Dilinger while also bringing the likeability needed to play the character accurately.
Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s latest masterpiece, gives a new vantage point of World War II. With the Nazi’s primary weapon, the “Jew Hunter” on the loose, the Jews of France were in serious danger. Their only hope is an elite American militia known to Nazi’s across the globe as “the Basterds.” Brad Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Raine, the head of the basterds who are in the business of killing Nazi’s. And as Pitt states: “business is a booming.” Christopher Waltz turns in a brilliant, Oscar-winning, performance as the “Jew hunter” who is both elegant and graceful but at the same time extremely vicious, killing every Jew that crosses his path.
While there were no major sports flicks in 2009, the movie going public did not go home disappointed. Watchmen, Public Enemies and Inglourious Basterds were just three examples of the great films of 2009.
